Today, February 20th, 2017, Kurt Cobain would have been 50. For a lot of people, his life and death is still a hard subject to talk about because of the impact he had on the lives of so many is so profound.
But today we celebrate his life, the things he’s done and said that makes people still feel so deeply for his loss all these years later.

Heres some of the rad things Kurt said and done which made us love him:

Smells Like Teen Spirit – Top of the Pops 1991

When Nirvana was asked to perform on the “Top of the Pops” stage, initially they were asked to lip sync and mime the entire song… After realizing that that wouldn’t fly with the band, they compromised by letting Kurt do the vocals live. So after some fake strumming, Kurt stars to sing but instead of his iconic, grungey sound, he sung in a low, kinda monotone voice. They weren’t asked to come back after that……

Lithium – MTV Music Video Awards 1992

Nirvana was the obvious choice to preform at the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards. Immediately MTV wanted them to preform ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ but the guys didn’t want too. They were pretty adamant about preforming ‘Rape Me’, ultimately, they settled on ‘Lithium’. So the band gets up there and starts to play ‘Rape Me’ and MTV cut to an emergency break, so then they started to play ‘Lithium’ and you can just see Kurt oozing sarcasm when singing the lyrics, “Im so happy”

When he was in charge of teaching his baby daughter some very important life lessons

“I’m just teaching her how to cuss and flip people off”

When he got married in his pajamas

When the band had his back after getting punched by a bouncer after jumping into the crowd

They were preforming “Love Buzz” and Kurt jumped into the crowd. While he was trying to get back to the stage he hit this dude with his guitar, so the guy attacked him, but the band had his back and Dave Grohl even leaped over his drum set.

When he tried to protect his fans from drug addiction

“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self esteem”

When he taught us all that there is no substitute for authenticity:

“I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.”

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are”

“There’s good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much, so much that it makes me feel too fucking sad.”

I mean I like to be passionate and sincere but I also like to have fun and act like a dork. Geeks unite.”

“If you die you’re completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on. I’m not afraid of dying. Total peace after death, becoming someone else is the best hope I’ve got.”

“Rather be dead than cool”

“I would like to get rid of the homophobes, sexists, and racists in our audience. I know they’re out there and it really bothers me.”

and then there was that time where he stopped a show to help a girl who was being assulted by some asshole in the audience

Kurt Cobain was an incredible, incredible person. His art, his personality and his authenticity changed lives, and is still profoundly influencing people. He was and still is so fucking important. Happy 50th Kurt! Rock in Peace.
